Keynote Speakers

Dr. Gonzalez is Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Director of the Gastrointestinal Pathology Service at Emory University Hospital. He received his MD from the Medical College of Georgia and completed AP/CP residency training at Emory University, followed by fellowships in surgical and gastrointestinal pathology at Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Gonzalez has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications and a textbook on liver pathology, as well as chapters for several other textbooks and numerous topics on Pathology Outlines, where he previously served as Editor in Chief. He has lectured nationally and internationally, including at USCAP and CAP annual meetings, and has given several lectures on the pathCast platform. He served as Chair of the CAP Surgical Pathology Committee (term ending 2026) and has participated in multiple dataset authoring committes for the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting. He is currently President-Elect of the Rodger C. Haggitt Gastrointestinal Pathology Society, Chair of the Social Media Subcommittee for the International Academy of Pathology, and a Regional Editor for Histopathology. Dr. Gonzalez has received residency teaching awards from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Emory, and in 2023, he received the Gastrointestinal Pathology Society’s Jack Yardley Investigator Award.

Dr. Anne Mills is a tenured Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Virginia. She received her MD from UVA in 2008 and completed Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency at Stanford University in 2012, subsequently returning to UVA to receive fellowship training in Gynecologic & Breast Pathology and Cytopathology. She joined the UVA faculty in 2015 and maintains a busy clinical schedule that includes in-house gynecologic pathology, breast pathology, and cytopathology specimens, as well as a consultative service for challenging gynecologic pathology cases submitted from all over the country.

Her research focuses on human papillomavirus-related neoplasia, heritable and mismatch repair-deficient malignancies, immunotherapy biomarkers, and rare endometrial carcinoma histotypes, and she has published over 100 original articles and chapters on these topics. She is active in reviewing emerging research through her role on the Editorial Boards of The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, Modern Pathology, and The International Journal of Gynecologic Pathology.

In addition to focusing on resident and fellow education at UVA, where she serves as both the AP/CP Residency Director and Gyn/Breast Fellowship Director, she delivers lectures on gynecologic neoplasia for practicing pathologists around the world. Her contributions to the field have most recently been recognized with a CAP Lifetime Achievement Award (2023) and UVA School of Medicine Early Achievement Award (2025).

Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children as well as trail and road running, lifting weights, reading fiction, tending and propagating indoor plants, and engaging in water sports both above and below the surface. While in Australia, she hopes to do some SCUBA diving with the Great Whites off Port Lincoln!
